How to Listen

There are three ways to listen to KAMV:

Listening Online: This is if you want to listen to a show while being online. Click on the link of your relevant media player and after a few moments of connecting, the show will begin to play. Need a media player? Learn more here.

Podcast: Podcasts are internet radio programmes. The term stems from the iPod, the portable MP3 player from Apple. You download a podcast feeder software, such as Juice or iTunes, and subscribe to KAMV by copying and pasting the KAMV podcast URL into the software:

http://www.afsc-pswro.org/KAMV/podcast.xml

(Learn more about podcasting here.)

MP3-Download: This is just like podcasting, except that you don't download into an iPod but instead into your computer. Once downloaded, you can listen to a show on your computer or copy it to a portable MP3 player, all without being online. (Learn more here.)

Listening Online

Click on the link of your relevant media player and after a few moments of connecting, the show will begin to play.

If you have a Download Manager utility, the file will download first, then your media player should open and start playing it.

Don't have a media player? Download one here FREE...

PC: Real Player, Windows Media Player, Winamp or QuickTime
MAC: iTunes

Downloading and Playing MPEG (mp3) Sound Files

In order to download an MPEG (mp3) sound file, right-click on the appropriate link to download. Then “Save target as..." to your desktop or to a file of your choice. Next, right-click on the icon of the file you just saved, choose “Open with" and, finally, select your media player. The audio file should start playing.

A typbical 25-minute KAMV show is just under 7 MB. A high-speed ISDN, DSL, T-1 or cable modem (broadband) connection can deliver the file generally in less than five minutes. Using a 56K modem, the download time is much slower.

Podcasting software...

Mac and PC users: We recommend Juice - it's free and works on all computers. You can schedule Juice to download shows automatically.

Non-iPod users: Once Juice downloaded a show, you can then play it in your media player on your computer, or load it into your portable media player, just like any other mp3.

iPod users: We recommend iTunes, which now includes podcasting. iTunes passes podcasts to your iPod just like any other MP3s.

So, just how does this podcasting work?

More and more people are getting into podcasting and it's becoming known as a kind of citizens' radio. It gives ordinary people the opportunity to produce their own radio shows, on whatever topic they wish, and offer them up to the listening masses over the internet.

Podcasts are audio broadcasts created and stored digitally on the Internet. Instead of being broadcast over the airwaves once and lost, like with traditional radio, podcasts were created to be stored and played at the user's convenience. Think of them as radio shows waiting to be downloaded. There are currently thousands of podcasts available covering everything from automobiles to rock 'n roll.

Once you have the podcasts on your computer you can listen to them there and then or copy them to your portable audio player and listen to them later.

Steps using the Juice software: Download the Juice software. Once you've installed Juice, select the Subscription tab. Then click on the green circle icon just below the tab and enter the KAMV URL into the pop-up window. Now you have subscribed to KAMV, and KAMV appears in the subscriptions list. To receive the newest podcasts, you can set the scheduling options so that Juice scans for new downloads as often as you like, or you can control it manually. When it is done downloading new files, it adds them to your library, all ready to be played or synched to your MP3 device.

Juice uses RSS (really simple syndication) to "feed" files to
your computer

Steps using the iTunes software: Download the iTunes software. Once you've installed iTunes, click on the Advance menu and select "subscribe to podcast." Then paste the KAMV url into the box. KAMV will now be listed under the Podcast folder in the navigation bar on the left. To receive the latest podcast, go to the Podcasts folder, check KAMV, and click on the Update icon in the top right hand corner.
